AEC Cloud Enterprise Hosting? Three Questions Answered

I was up last night thinking about our business and the services it offers. I realized that some of you out there might not fully understand what it is that we do and how we are different for other "Cloud Hosting" companies out there. In this post, I will answer four basic questions about AEC Cloud that hopefully helps clarify who we are and how we can help your business transition to the next level of IT infrastructure and operations.

As always, we are here to help you and answer any questions you might have.

Who is AEC Cloud?

AEC Cloud is a full service, enterprise, cloud hosting company, focused on servicing the AEC Industry (Architecture, Engineering and Construction).

Our roots in the business started back in 1999, working in IT on construction projects with Turner Construction. We immediately saw that there was a huge gap between traditional IT, and the IT needs of a construction company and their projects. Everything from the software used, to the approach that construction companies take in assessing projects and understanding billing was different.

From those humble beginnings, AEC Cloud has become the leading enterprise cloud hosting company for the AEC Industry for over 16 years. We have literally seen it all, and leading construction firms leverage our knowledge base to help them make the correct decisions for their upcoming IT needs.

What is AEC Cloud Enterprise Hosting?

AEC Cloud Enterprise Hosting is a business that is focused on the AEC Industry and its specific unique needs. Not every cloud hosting company understands or has ever heard of hosting the software you use everyday in the office and on the job site.

Software such as:

Just to name a few.

And then there is integration of these software suites to leverage the job site data you have into information you can use in real time. Combining information from various software and coming up with new ways to see that data to solve problems and maintain a positive bottom line.

Here at AEC Cloud, we have been working closely with the AEC Industry for over 16 years and know any possible issues, before they become and issue.

Why choose AEC Cloud to participate in your IT requirements?

With over 16 years, solely focused on the AEC Industry's IT needs, we have a deep knowledge base of how to put together seamless projects. Out customers are happy and understand the value of bringing an expert on-board to help guide them through the murky and confusing waters of cloud hosting and technology.

We are NOT a new start-up, that has no history or experience.

And then there is the overall cost savings and flexibility that AEC Cloud brings to the table.

The following are the other compelling reasons as to why it makes business sense to move your Enterprise Applications to a cloud hosted environment.

  • Staying focused on your core competency vs. IT headaches.
  • Redirecting capital to core business expenses vs upfront costs.
  • Receiving higher quality at a lower cost.
  • Leveraging knowledge and resources from experienced professionals with over 16 years of experience.
  • Production application hosting for all of your software programs.
  • Disaster recovery sites managed.

What Does Cloud Computing Mean for Your Enterprise?

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) provides the best definition of cloud computing:

“Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management.

Enterprise cloud computing harnesses "cloud computing" for a competitive business advantage in terms of cost cutting, as well as innovation and collaboration on a per project basis.

Probably more important than cost savings, is the power of having virtually unlimited computing resources available at a moments notice. Resources can be provisioned up or down rapidly, allowing businesses to act quickly on new opportunities.

What does “cloud computing” mean for your enterprise?

Here are three key points:

  1. IT demands can be rapidly scaled up or down depending on the immediate need, leading to a reduction of overall IT costs. The enterprise is only paying for what resources it needs at any given moment.
  2. Risk and startup expenses for new projects are greatly reduced. Businesses will not have to realize a large capital outlay to bring those resources online. New resources can be brought online in a matter of hours, not weeks, and more importantly those resources can be quickly scaled up or down, depending on how the project goes. Testing new business ideas becomes a feasible reality allowing for new opportunities for growth.
  3. Large projects require collaboration. Cloud computing allows all companies involved on any given project to share work spaces and data in ways never before imagined. Further integration with BizTalk allows data to pass seamlessly between applications and organizations to maximize efficiency and increase the bottom line.

As you learn more about cloud computing and the incredible array of possibilities, you begin to understand why everyone is buzzing about "the cloud". It is a huge paradigm shift for businesses today, tooling them with IT capabilities that were only a dream 10 years ago.

Enterprise Mobility - Three Keys

Construction worker in construction machinery discussing with engineer blueprints on pad or tablet computer on siteThe idea behind Enterprise mobility is the opening up of the traditional office environment boundaries. While obviously the main office not going anywhere soon, the idea of the office is beginning to shift in real time. Staff is on the move which opens up the possibilities of new opportunities to gain business and increase efficiency. There are three components to "enterprise mobility".  All three are based around accessibility. Accessibility from anywhere, and accessibility anytime.

  • Data
  • Applications
  • Desktops

With all three of these components accessible via cloud hosting, enterprise mobility becomes a reality. Staff can work when they need to, and more importantly from anywhere they are located.

How Enterprise Mobility Will Further Penetrate AEC

Construction team working on project with tablet The AEC industry is mobile by nature—always has been. So topics like ‘enterprise mobility’ aren’t so much a discussion about what is new—but rather, what is next.

The landscape in construction today looks like this: Workers equipped with smartphones, tablets and other connected devices interacting with countless apps of all types, everyday in order to improve productivity and streamline workflow.

So at a broad level it’s safe to say that mobile has indeed permeated the AEC industry. What comes next, however, requires a bit deeper of a dig in order to uncover just how deep it will penetrate into the enterprise. Not only that, but it becomes a situation in which builders and contractors are looking to best prepare for what’s next.

When looking ahead for the AEC space, I believe it is important to evaluate the broader landscape of technology. Going forward, I see four broader trends associated with enterprise mobility with the potential of having wide-sweeping impact on how the AEC industry gets things done.

  1. Mobility Integration. Enterprise mobility is no longer operating in isolation from the rest of the enterprise. Integration with other key technologies will continue to progress, as data from these applications must be linked to back office functions and even play a greater role in processes like BIM (building information modeling).
  2. The AEC App Store. Could we soon be nearing a time when larger AEC companies are managing corporate-sanctioned apps on PCs and mobile devices? Enterprise app stores are indeed a real thing and promise greater control over the apps used by employees. Not only that, but they hold the potential for greater control over software expenditures. It’s not too far fetched to believe that as more and more large AEC firms embrace the idea of enterprise mobility that they will want to have greater control over the apps that their employees are accessing.
  3. Prime Time Cloud for Construction: Today you have major cloud vendors like Amazon AW, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure Cloud all making a play to extend their offerings to include mobile cloud solutions and services. The AEC space is ripe for these cloud giants to extend their mobile offerings.
  4. Cloud Content is King. All those great cloud-enabled storage apps like Box and Dropbox or productivity apps like Evernote suddenly become a gateway to putting your corporate data on the public cloud. More and more, these applications are being embraced for collaboration on all levels. We are already seeing the trend where major software applications are integrating with applications like Dropbox, Google Drive, Box and One Drive, among others.

construction worker using digital tablet with crane on the background

The days of early adoption with regards to enterprise mobility are well past us. In fact, being mobile is simply a prerequisite these days for getting things done effectively. Our clients have been adopting cloud-based desktops, apps and file storage.

Take as an example, Torcon, Inc. This privately-held construction management and general contracting firm is a long-time AEC Cloud client, running our hosting services for its deployment of Prolog from Meridian Systems.

The contractor is taking this system to a new level through the addition of a tablet PC-based field technology solution called Converge, which integrates with Prolog. With this mobile solution, such tasks as punch list updates, safety notices and daily field reports are available from the field. And the value does not stop there as Torcon anticipates using the mobile application for a range of additional functions like punch list management and the initiation of RFIs (requests for information).

Logo_AECCloud_Option2_167Torcon’s use of enterprise mobility is highly indicative of the current AEC landscape. And that begs the question: What is next for enterprise mobility in the AEC space, and how will you best prepare your firm going forward?

Enterprise Mobility: Hosted Virtual Desktops (HVD), Desktop as a Service (DaaS)

Construction specialist using a tablet computer Business is on the move, and by that I mean on the move outside the physical walls of the office. Mobile devices have blown the lid off the "traditional work place" and now allow workers to move outside the office and still be productive. In fact productivity has increased, along with efficiency. Gone are the days when you could only check your email at your physical work station at the office.

I remember the day that I got my first Blackberry. What a revolution! Here I was sitting in a cafe checking my email and responding to clients and colleagues instantly! Before, I would have to worry I was missing some important email while outside the office at a meeting or running errands. It was an incredible watershed moment in the history of the mobile work force, and the technology has only continued to improve.

Tablets, iPhones, Android mobile, not to mention laptops, have opened the doors to access data, software and communication anywhere; anytime.

Of course we still use our desktop computers. Who doesn't like a large display screen and full size keyboard when there is a pile of work to get through? But what do you do when you need to go home to take care of something, but still need to push out that big report? This is where the Hosted Virtual Desktop (HVD), also known as Desktop as a Service (DaaS) comes into play.

AdobeStock_88855189HVD is just what the name implies. It is a desktop that is hosted on a virtual server. Users connect to that desktop via their personal device, laptop, personal computer, tablet, etc. To the end user, the experience is the same. They open their personal "virtual desktop" and see all their applications, documents and data.

For example, a worker is at the office working on a document, but has to leave the office. He then goes home and opens his/her HVD and all the documents are still open, just as they were before back at the office. The "desktop" is accessible from any internet connected device and viewed anywhere, anytime.

Apart from the beauty of accessing your personal desktop anywhere, anytime, the benefits don't end there.

All maintenance, support, upgrades and backups are performed by the service provider operating the virtual servers where the desktops are stored. The service provider can scale up or down the amount of power a user needs, as well as offer redundancy and offsite data backup.

This of course is more interesting to the CIO, than it is to the end user. To the end user, the experience is the same, but instead of having access to their desktop at the office, they now have access to their desktop from any device. To the CIO, the advantages go well beyond that. Business continuity alone is enough to justify such a transition to HVD, not to mention the reduced costs in maintenance and support.

Logo_AECCloud_Option2_300Here at AEC Cloud, we have focused our hosted IT solutions to the AEC space. We have been in the game for over 15 years now, helping the big firms such as Hensel Phelps, to the small guys, make their IT transition into the mobile enterprise workplace as smooth as possible. We know what needs to be done, and more importantly, we know how to do it.

If you have been putting off your IT transition, the time has come to take another look. The technology in the space has come a long way, and continues to improve. And the benefits gained, far out weight the pain of making the move.

Hosted Software: SaaS vs Hosted

AdobeStock_88855189As more businesses move their internal IT structure to an external environment, the myriad choices in hosting can often be confusing. It is a virtual alphabet soup out there: IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, cloud, hosted. The list goes on. Today I wanted to touch on hosted software and two viable options available to businesses. Hosted software vs. Software as a Service or SaaS. While the two are ultimately similar to the end user, there are advantages and disadvantages to both models.

Hosted Software

Hosted Software is a model that most of us are familiar with. In the past, software was purchased and installed on a local computer or server. The license was good for a lifetime, with upgrades purchased on an annual basis if needed. The costs of the software were all upfront with the initial purchase.

Hosted software is more or less based on this model, but the main difference is where the software is installed. Instead of it being in a local location, i.e. your personal computer or server down the hall, it is installed on a server outside of the office and accessed via a virtual desktop.

The biggest advantage of this model is the mobile aspect. The software is accessible from any terminal or device with internet access, from any location. Additional advantages include a reduction of maintenance and upgrades, off site backups, scalability of server resources, and an overall reduction in IT costs.

The software license is still purchased upfront and owned by the end user or business.

Software as a Service

Software as a Service, often referred to as a SaaS model, differs from hosted software in two main areas. First is the software is rented on a monthly basis and charged per end user. The costs of this model are spread out over time, but can add up to being more than what a hosted software model could be. Monthly charges add up over time.

The second difference is where the software is hosted. Saas is hosted by the software developer, on their servers and accessed via a web browser interface. Again, this model does offer advantages of mobility, reduced maintenance, and scalability of server resources.

One big disadvantage is ownership of the data, as the it is often stored with the vendor.

Considerations

While both models offer the end user a very similar experience, there are some things to consider. The world of IT is changing at lightening speed and it is critical that decision makers are well informed and have consultants that can help guide them through the maze of technology options. Decisions made today, can have huge impacts on business flexibility down the road, even as short as a year from now.

In the end, choosing your service provider that has proven field experience is critical. Are you willing to put the future of your business in the hands of someone that knows nothing of your industry or has open their doors in the past year?

Hosted Software Explained

AdobeStock_88855189With all the news about cloud hosting and the buzzwords surrounding it, I thought it makes sense to take a minute and explain a little bit about what "hosted software" is. As the term suggests, it is your software that is installed and accessed on a remote server, offsite from the traditional "office". The list of benefits is long, but that is for another article.

There are two types of hosted software. Software hosted by the manufacturer on a subscription basis (Software As A Service or SaaS), and software that has been purchased and installed on remote servers to be accessed by end users. Both types of installation can be accessed via the internet and a web browser. Traditionally the software has been focused on a desktop or laptop interface, but more and more these software applications are accessible via handheld devices such as tablets and smartphones.

Hosted software is not installed on a user's machine, but instead installed on a remote server and accessed via a web browser, much like going to a website and using Gmail for example. Computing power and data processing are not dependant on the local machine, and are done solely on the remote server. In this case, the end user can get away with using a low power computer that only needs to run a web browser. In days past, end users had to have high end latest model computers to run many of the popular software programs. With hosted software, the processing power of one server can be centralized and taken advantage of by many end users.

Updates, patches and upgrades are all done on the one central remote server, as opposed to all the individual end user computers. This allows the closing of potentially damaging security holes in the local infrastructure.

Your Workforce is Mobile, Shouldn't Your Data Be Too?

Today's workforce is already mobile and this is only increasing everyday. The mobile workforce has been possible largely to a shift in technology that allows real time data to be shared anywhere, anytime. I'm talking about the cloud. Cloud hosting has revolutionized where work takes place. The days of being tied to an office cubicle are over. Staff is much more efficient when they can move outside the walls of the office. That efficiency is compounded when you add the accessibility of desktops, files and applications on the go. AdobeStock_44575060Tablets, smartphones and laptops have opened up how we access and share data. Information is power. When your staff has access to real time data shared among a project team, productivity goes up. In addition, costs come down as projects can move faster with less down time or costly mistakes.

On site or off site, the lines of where work has historically taken place are now blurred and largely erased. Employees can instant access to everyone on their team and fresh data that can be acted upon. This has removed the delay of on site data collection and off site management decision making. Projects can move faster with less down time.

Logo_AECCloud_Option2_300Being nimble in today's work space is the key to success. Business owners always have to stay ahead of the curve in regards to the tools they have at their disposal. That goes for heavy equipment, as well as for communication and data sharing. Enterprise cloud hosting is now a proven powerful tool that has revolutionized the workforce. Businesses have to move fast and be flexible. Having the most up to date data and information is key to that recipe. This is where cloud hosting comes in.

The road map to getting your data from a static server to to a cloud hosted environment can be daunting. At times it even appears to be a leap of faith. Choosing the partner in this business decision is key to a successful transition with limited or no downtime.

LeadershipWidget_270_blueHere at AEC Cloud, we have been helping businesses in the AEC industry make those decisions in a calculated and planned way. We have over 15 years in the business and have consciously chosen to focus on the AEC industry. We know what you need before you do. Hosted Applications + Virtual Desktop = WIN

Home_CaseStudiesWidget_DECC_370x320The mobile work force and the benefits it brings to any business model are here to stay. Smartphones and tablets have become the next generation thin client, using the power of cloud hosted applications, file storage and web services. While these devices have torn down the walls of the office, there is still a need for the desktop experience. Many early adopters of the Virtual Desktop, or desktop as thin client, still bear the emotional scars of slow refresh rates, and overall poor performance. So poor in fact it was at times crippling to work productivity.

The technology of the desktop thin client has dramatically improved and is now a viable option for both inside the office, and outside. Virtualization of desktops has come a long ways over the past couple years with improvements in graphic acceleration, server protocols and server performance. End users of the Virtual Desktop can now enjoy a 'normal' desktop experience with full access to files and applications they need, when and where they need them.

Cloud-based desktops coupled with hosted applications and file storage open up increases in worker productivity and a lowering of IT costs. Employees can enjoy a mobile work-space, accessing their personal desktop, files and applications from any connected terminal.

At this point, it is worth the time and effort for IT departments to take a hard look at this opportunity, and at a minimum do some cost/productivity comparisons. Enterprise Application Hosting

Cloud hosting your business applications has now become a viable and cost effective option to any business IT plan. cloud-saasIn the past, businesses have built and maintained on premises servers along with software installations and updates. This is a labor intensive plan that consumes a large part of business IT budgets with no real gain in innovation and overall addition to business productivity. By choosing to host your business applications in one of the cloud hosted configurations (private cloud, public cloud or hybrid cloud), businesses can quickly see a reduction in overall IT budgets while freeing up IT staff to add to business innovation and productivity. Software as a Service (SaaS) allows businesses to only pay for the number of users they need on a month to month basis. Budgets can be flexible according to business demand without being locked into a fixed user scenario.

Infrastructure and software updates are eliminated as tasks for IT staff. Also, backups are performed on a regular basis off site adding to the overall business continuity plan.

The largest gain in our opinion is the addition of the mobile aspect to employee productivity. Users are no longer tied to one terminal at a desk in the main office. A user's desktop can be accessed from anywhere, anytime allowing productivity gains and an increase in employee job performance.

Some of the benefits of moving enterprise applications to a cloud hosted environment:

  • Ease of use IT staff has control over end users experience and accessibility through an easy to use control panel. Users can be added and removed as needed
  • Flexibility is key Applications can be allocated on a per user basis, on a per month basis.
  • Real Cost Savings Pay as you go billing allows businesses to pay for what they consume.
  • Reliability is essential You need access to applications all day, everyday. Our hosting platform has seen a 100% uptime for the past 5 years. Redundancy and state of the art emergency measures make sure you have access to business critical applications 24/7.
  • Scalability when you need it Having the capability to handle a growing amount of workload is key to any business' success.
  • Security of you data Seurity is our highest priority and you can sleep at night knowing that your data is safe in our highly secure hosting environment.

We host any business application you need. If you don't see it in our list below, just ask!

cloud-saasHosting your business applications at AEC Cloud brings resource, financial and innovative benefits to the company.

Allow your IT department to bring value

If you are still hosting your business applications on premises, then you already know that your IT staff's time is consumed with patching software, upgrading hardware and monitoring backups. Many research groups have found that up to 80% of IT staffing time is consumed by "keep the lights on projects."

By moving your business applications off premises, you can free up your IT staff to do more innovation that brings real value to the company.

Business application performance and scalability

Users of business applications need on demand performance and reliability to do their job efficiently. Cloud hosted applications deliver this whether in a private cloud, public cloud or a hybrid solution configuration. Users can be added or decreased on demand allowing for fast elasticity of resources. Scalability in a word.

Cloud Desktop: Access Your Desktop Anywhere Anytime

What is a Cloud Desktop?

virtual-desktopCloud Desktop is known by many names. The most common is probably "Virtual Desktop", but it also is called Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).

The idea is very simple, your "computer" is hosted on a server in the cloud and is accessed from anywhere, anytime. All you need is a web browser and by going to a webpage and logging into your account, you can have full access and control of your desktop. This will be the exact same desktop that you now enjoy on your local laptop or computer, with all the software you need and the documents to work on.

Once you move your desktop to the Cloud, you will never look back. In fact, I can say from personal experience that it has been the most liberating thing I have done with IT ever. No more syncing. No more waiting to get home to work on a file. No more backups. No more software upgrades. No more hardware worries. The technology is solid and the benefits are huge!

Cloud Desktops, or Virtual Desktops have come a long way in the past couple years. Now logging into your virtual desktop, you will be viewing the same desktop experience that you do now, but it just located on a server outside of your home or office. All your setting. All your files. All the software you use everyday. It will all be there ready to go. Efficiency factor goes up by triple digits, quite literally.

When working in your virtual desktop, you will access the files you need and they will be updated in one location. No more carrying around flash drives and syncing files with updates. Or worse, forgetting to sync and losing the updates you made on another computer or device. With the cloud desktop, you will update the file and that is it, done.

The virtual desktop is very easy to access. All you need is any device with a browser. Tablet, phone, laptop, desktop computer, they all work the same and give you access to your "Virtual Desktop" anywhere, anytime. There are no downloads needed, just a browser to enter your desktop.

The features and benefits are to many to ignore.

Here is a partial list of what you can expect by migrating your current local desktop to a cloud server:

  • Access from any device, i.e. smart phone, tablet, laptop, desktop
  • Access from a browser
  • No downloads
  • Access to all your files
  • Access to any software you want to install
  • Access to any file or folder
  • No more syncing
  • File transfer to and from your virtual desktop
  • Secure file storage
  • Backup all your files and settings
  • Software upgrades
  • 24/7 online support
  • Low per user cost
  • No hardware to worry about

So what are you waiting for? It is time to at least see a demo of what this technology can do for you and your business' productivity and bottom line.

Cloud Mobility White Paper

Offerings_Hosting_370x320There is no question mobility hits the nail on the head as an issue for the AEC space. Cloud (see cloud definition post) is driving it and as a result the primary distinction here is if you have internet connectivity or require a disconnected state. This is the entry question to all others because it weighs heavily on your options. Either way, the connectivity gap is closing as the 3G, 4G and beyond come to fruition but there are still those tight spots on the remotest job site or in basements that struggle with connectivity. With internet connectivity users can leverage many more options via solutions like Citrix receiver clients which are available for most operating systems and devices. This enables use of any application leaving the reality of the form factor up to the user. In addition, connected users can leverage all of the disconnected capable applications as well. This would include all your applications being marketed as "XYZ Mobile" like the offerings from Oracle Primavera and Meridian Systems which include various operating system specific applications for Windows and iOS based devices. Android seems to be the laggard OS of choice among developers.

Along the lines of applications, some great things are happening in the AEC space. Beyond The extensions of existing line of business applications (like noted above) there is a nice community of 3rd party developers that are beginning to be able to add value as business application vendors get cloud capable. Remember cloud does not mean hosted. If you refer to NIST definition of cloud, I'm simply referring to the self service and programmable characteristics. Line of business application vendors that make their applications openly (key point here) accessible via technology like web service API's enable a community of developers to work with their community.

Among laptops, tablets and phones, tablets seem to be the sweet spot as a form factor for size, weight, and visibility. The ones with good touch controls introduce a completely new experience for us adults that learn visually or have big fingers. I've been using an iPad since its first launch, and write this blog using one. Trust me, it's great.

In case you were unsure about the tablet revolution...here's some more back up via a nice white paper.

Case Study: Torcon Increases Productivity with AEC Cloud Hosting

Case Study: Torcon Increases Productivity with AEC Cloud Hosting

The Problem: A Need for Reliable Reporting Capabilities Torcon is a builder that provides construction management and general contracting services to leading corporations and private institutions.

With 175 employees and clients across the country and in Puerto Rico, the company needs to ensure that its employees are connected and can access reports and other information they need.

“We typically have 20 clients, and between 30 and 40 different projects running concurrently,” said Rich Zavali, Engineering Application Manager at Torcon. “We need our staff to have access to database files and other project-related documents, whether they’re at a construction site or working in the office.”

The Solution: AEC Cloud’s Hosting Solution Torcon started working with AEC Cloud in 2006.

Before working with AEC Cloud, we had security concerns and our database access was limited,” Zavali said. “AEC Cloud gave us reporting access from different locations, and allowed us to run global reports across different databases.”

Over the years, AEC Cloud worked with Torcon to introduce new applications. Today, their custom solution gives Torcon’s employees access to an integrated package of virtual desktop, document management, financial, and project management tools.

The software package includes:

  • Meridian System’s Prolog Suite,
  • Prolog Converge,
  • and Prolog Connect

AEC Cloud also recently began hosting CMIC, Torcon’s financial software system for the last seven years. Employees can access these tools from a job site, or any of the company’s three offices in New Jersey, Philadelphia, or Puerto Rico.

This increases their productivity and helps them provide better service to clients.

Torcon recognizes the importance of partnering with a company that understands the construction industry and can support the software it uses on a daily basis.

“AEC Cloud understands the products we use and has proven expertise in the Architecture Engineering and Construction industry,” Zavali said. “This allows us to focus on our core business of managing our customers’ projects, and not worry about the technical issues.”

Torcon also appreciates the reliable technical support that AEC Cloud provides. “They provide excellent customer service,” Zavali said. “If there’s a problem, we know we can call a qualified person to help us.

We don’t need separate people to keep our IT systems running, which also enhances our productivity and helps keep operating costs down.”

AEC Cloud is also an expert in ensuring document security. “We’ve had excellent document security and stability over the years,” Zavali explained. “Even though our employees are working at various locations, we never worry about security.

It’s comforting to us and reassuring to our clients.”

Torcon plans to continue working with AEC Cloud for its IT hosting needs. “Partnering with AEC Cloud allows us to focus on our clients and continue providing excellent customer service,” Zavali said. "We’ve increased our efficiency and productivity, which helps us compete more effectively with other companies in our industry."

"AEC Cloud really cares about your business, and we look forward to working with them in the future.”

AEC Cloud understands the products we use and has proven expertise in the Architecture Engineering and Construction industry. This allows us to focus on our core business of managing our customers’ projects, and not worry about the technical issues. Rich Zavali, Engineering Application Manager at Torcon

Your IT and the Cloud: Are they Compatible?

Today we present the second of three articles about Cloud Hosting specifically for the AEC Industry. We look forward to your comments

Offerings_Hosting_370x320Just because your AEC business is running legacy technology doesn’t mean it cannot make an easy transition to the cloud. In fact, many of today’s most successful matches between the cloud and construction are based on the process of “cloud-enabling” existing IT systems.

AEC Cloud has been hosting early every construction software available since 2000. It just comes down to a matter of compatibility.

You see, running an AEC business requires such core systems as project management, document management, accounting, estimating and job costing, for example. For the most part, these systems are not native cloud applications. No problem. Service solutions available today can ensure that what isn’t “cloud native” in your IT department can certainly become “cloud ready.”

Of course, the ultimate compatibility test is made up such factors as time, cost and security. But such issues have become relative non-issues as cloud services and solutions are faster, better, cheaper and more secure. Just ask our clients, such as The J. Companies and Morley Builders.

A Secure Package Let’s take The J Companies, a builder/construction manager based in New York, as our first example. The company started down its cloud-based IT path in 2005 by hosting Prolog Manager from Meridian Systems using our AEC Cloud. Over time as the needs of IT expanded, so too has the role of the cloud.

For example, with clients located across the country, and with multiple construction, consulting or development projects going on simultaneously, the need to compile information and keep documents organized has become the priority.

Today, you can find Microsoft Office, Microsoft Exchange, Document Locator from ColumbiaSoft, and Master Builder from Sage, accompanying its Prolog Manager application up in the cloud. A custom solution gives employees access to an integrated package of virtual desktop, document management, accounting, and project management tools that can be accessed anywhere and anytime.

So let’s talk security. Document Locator is essentially the core of the business for The J Companies. With the AEC Cloud, an unlimited library of documents has become stored in the cloud. Given the high quality document security, that means that there is never a risk of information being left unsecure in the cloud.

Just ask David Brot, the Principal of The J Companies, who says that he has never needed to worry about his company’s information. Document security and stability in the cloud has never been an issue.

Low Cost and Connected Now let’s address that issue of high cost. Back in 2013 when we first engaged with Morley Builders the company was talking with many different software vendors about developing a custom solution. The company was looking to have its employees maintain large amounts of drawing and specification information and stay connected, while working at construction sites or back at the office.

It was an exercise that, as many other AEC companies have figured out, is prohibitive in terms of time and cost.

This is where an OBA can come into play. This is an application written for Microsoft Office applications based on .NET technology that uses web services to connect to a Line of Business (LOB) application, or other applications. OBAs that are built on the Microsoft Office Business Application framework are used for extending LOB applications. This means that AEC companies can capture critical information in spreadsheets and work offline.

Today Morley Builders uses our Drawings & Specification OBA. This allows its employees to input large volumes of data all at once. The fact that the OBA interfaces with Microsoft Excel and other spreadsheets makes it easy for employees to get up to speed learning the tool very quickly.

Like The J Companies, Morley Builders works with Prolog. This is where the direct connection from the OBA comes in handy, making the process of batch revisions an integrated process between the programs.

Cloud Considerations It’s not difficult to find these types of success stories within the AEC industry. More and more, we see companies coming to us to help make the cloud a critical part of the way they run their IT systems across the company.

Applications like Dropbox, Evernote, Box and others have catapulted the idea of “the cloud” into the IT discussion these days. But the truth of the matter is that the cloud has long been a part of doing business in construction, tied to core operational systems.

Legacy IT systems are necessary in construction. So too is the cloud. Ensuring they are compatible can be the most powerful investment your company can make in 2015.
